Duties include monitoring 21 lakes throughout the county.
Water samples are tested for Nutrient Levels (total phosphate,nitrates),
Alkalinity, pH Levels and water clarity (secchi disk).
The District added Calcium, Aluminum and Chlorophyl a to its testing program in
1998, with Lab work being performed at
the Adirondack Aquatic Institute
at Paul Smiths College.
Lakes are monitored and samples taken once each month for six months, May - October.

Hamilton County is situated in Upstate NY totally within
the Adirondack Park. There are 9 towns with a total year round resident population just over 5000. Hamilton County is mostly dependent upon tourist trade for it's livelihood. Visitors to the area enjoy a variety of seasonal activities some of which
are Snow mobiling, X-country and
Downhill Skiing and Ice Fishing in the winter months. During the summer months there are numerous Camping Facilities, Lakes, Rivers, Streams and Hiking Trails throughout the Park. Hunting and Fishing still remain a challenge to Sportsman from around the world, as well as Mountain Climbing, Canoeing, Rafting the Hudson River and Kayaking for the Adventure Seekers. The Northville - Lake Placid Trail winds its way thru the back country for close to 80 miles, hiking destinations at either end taunt the spirited and hearty. During fall weather the Foliage Season brings an onslaught of Leaf Peepers into the area, seeking panoramic vistas of green, gold, red, and yellow pallets spread out upon the mountain sides. The county resident population rises to over 20,000 strong during the summer months as seasonal homeowners return to spend a few weeks each year. Hamilton County, New York is unique, listed
