Welcome to this new challenge of reading through the New Testament. If you have just finished the Old Testament you will find that reading on now will give you a fresh, new perspective. If you are just joining us, look forward to this highest of adventures. The New Testament, you will find, moves along very quickly. One reason for this is that it doesn’t even cover 200 years of history. The Old Testament spanned 2000! Another reason is that you undoubtedly are already a lot more familiar with this section of God’s Word. Still, to read through it will take self-discipline. Be faithful and diligent to stay up with the reading every day.
The Gospel of Mark is probably the earliest of the gospels. Mark was a disciple of Peter’s and this Gospel is pretty much as Peter preached it himself. We will use it as an historical guide to help us become familiar with and study the life and ministry of Jesus. Then, when we read the other Gospels, we’ll be reading them at the approximate chronological time of their writing. We’ll do the same with the book of Acts. It’s the only other book of history in the New Testament and was written later but we’ll use it as an historical guide to help us through the formation of the early Church. Then, when it is the appropriate time, we’ll stop and read the various letters that were written to the Churches and that make up the majority of the New Testament.
