| It’s month #4 and you are already half-way through! This month we are introduced to the group of letters in the New Testament that are collectively referred to as “the Pastoral Epistles.” The meaning of that designation is primarily to distinguish them apart from all of Paul’s letters. That isn’t to say that Paul’s letters were not pastoral, it is just a title to refer to all the others in a group. The Pastoral Epistles were written by different men. There are two that are by the apostle Peter, three by the apostle John, one by James, the brother of Jesus, and one by Jude, about whom we know little. The first of this group, and the longest, is the epistle entitled “To the Hebrews.” We don’t know the human author. Is that a problem? Does that violate the letter’s authority in the Church if we don’t know who wrote it? Basically, no. Like all of the material in the New Testament, this book has been judged according to its historicity and its content. The consistent testimony of the early Christian Church was that Hebrews truly is the inspired Word of God. I call the book of Hebrews “God’s OT Introduction to NT believers.” You might remember I had you read sections of Hebrews last year to help you through certain difficult parts of the Law. It’s the book of Hebrews that shows us clearly how the entire Bible is to be seen as one message from one God with one purpose and goal. And it helps us to see the true structure of Scripture as being a theology of the Covenant.
